3:30 pm. The Levy List:  My favorite Deep Sky Objects from 40 years of comet hunting
This symposium is a journey to distant objects in the night sky.   it is not a mere listing of objects but an approach to the wonders of the Deep Sky.  It will begin with objects that can be found even in a light-polluted sky, which means that even someone just starting out in astronomy can enjoy them.   Second:  the objects will be well distributed in the sky, so that readers from different countries, and different hemispheres, will all be able to observe at least a portion of the selection. In addition to a finder chart and interesting facts, these objects will be accompanied by historical notes on how observers from different  lands and with different telescopes found and observed them.

I am a comet hunter.  As I would search a region of sky, occasionally I would come across an interesting object - an unusually colored star or cluster of stars, a cloud of gas, or a galaxy.  I do not include every object I saw; an object has to have something special about it to merit inclusion.   Over the years I have located about 350 objects, of which a sample will be highlighted in this presentation.

6:00 pm  Dinner

Evening:  If Clear, OBSERVING!
If cloudy: Symposium on Astronomy and Literature

Joining science and literature:  Shakespeare, Eclipses, and Changing Ideas of the Cosmos
On October 2, 1605, Londoners were treated to an almost total eclipse of the Sun at around the same time that Shakespeare's King Lear was exploring humanity's relation to the cosmos.  "These Late Eclipses in the Sun and Moon"  (a passage from the play)  begins a sophisticated discussion of that relation, based on real events in the night sky. This is just one example of the rich ness of astronomical allusions in English Literature that  I will explore in this presentation, which will be accompanied by illustrations and music.

2:00 pm: Through the Back Door:  A look at Photographic and CCD searching at Jarnac Observatory by Wendee Levy
This presentation explores the photographic and CCD comet survey at Jarnac Observatory.

3:00 pm: Project Skywatcher Presentaton and where the Adirondack Retreat fits in

With the advent of many Education and public outreach projects, we want to take advantage of David and Wendee Levy’s passion for the night sky to provide a motivation for as many young people as possible to enjoy the night sky.  We wish to set up a network of telescopes on one hand both for direct viewing and to gather images, and a network of schools and universities on the other to allow students to enjoy and learn from these telescopes.  The Twin Valleys Camp is a primary site where there will be two telescopes, one for visual viewing and one for automated CCD imaging, to get images that teachers and students can view at their leisure.
